Remington firearms production increased during the Civil War, a time when Remington rifles and muskets where used extensively in the Union Army. Firearms production continued, but it wasn’t until 1871 that Remington’s ammunition branch was established. This department produced ammo for shotguns, pistols, and rifles. Two years later, Remington actually manufactured the world’s first effective typewriter, further establishing their place as an innovation leader. By the turn of the century, Remington was a major company for both firearms and ammunition. They were so important to American forces that they provided roughly half the small-arms ammunition used by Allied forces during World War I. During the second world war, Remington produced over half of the ammo used by American forces and our allies.
